Terrorism and the power of fear : Comments

By Bill Calcutt, published 11/6/2014

Terrorism has a unique capacity to undermine democracy by eliciting a militaristic response that suspends or compromises a number of the important conventions and principles of civil society.

I sincerely wish I could disagree with just some of this Bill.
However, I can't given how well the case is argued, and all the more reason, we the people need to have what remains of our, supposedly, inviolable rights protected, with a long overdue bill of irrevocable rights!
I mean mate, the state still serves us, not visa versa.
And we Aussies have quite a history of service, patriotism, and the notion of a fair go!
Unfortunately, patent control freaks can and will use relatively minor events, like the assassination of Arch Duke Ferdinand, or the hijacking of planes by 13 miscreants, to massively and disproportionately, withdraw basic human rights from their own people.
Or attend a rifle owners rally wearing a "vest", convinced as all control freaks, I believe are, that they need to be terrified of their own people, even though each and everyone had to pass the pat down and metal detector test!
The power of fear has huge unmitigated power to overwhelmingly terrify, but most particularly, for those who are inherent cowards? Who invariably over react; or, have others do all the dirty work, or march into harms way for them?
Fortunately for the average grunt, our future wars will be increasingly fought almost anywhere, except the so called front, and by automated devices, able to go where no sane grunt would dare go! Perhaps even into El Presidente's bedroom?
Better one madman should die, than whole nations!
Even so, military action must remain the only remaining choice!
Not the first as seen in attempting to finish some unfinished Middle East business, and to hell with the collateral damage or unintended consequences!?

Neither terrorists nor the "security sector" could be successful without their friends and collaborators - the media!

The fact is that by far, most people die of natural causes and orders-of-magnitude more die and are injured on the roads, or even in domestic-violence or by wrong prescriptions than in all terror attacks combined, ever.

This shameful and traitorous reporting of terrorist events plays into the arms of both terrorists and the security sector, so are the public ceremonies of commemoration (while nobody commemorates those who died by slipping off in their bath). If only the media could remain silent about it, treating it as no-big-deal, then terrorism would become useless as a means of achieving anything, thus abandoned.

Yuyutsu,

An intriguing, if somewhat psychotic, approach.

So if someone is blown up in a market place, it's really no worse than an old person dying in their sleep ? One death = one death ?

So if you were beaten to death with a brick while walking home, that's really no more terrible than the aforesaid old person dying in their sleep ?

So perhaps we should completely decriminalise murder ? It's no big deal, really ?

Dear Joe,

It's one thing for the police to do its job and another for reporters to gossip for the vicarious entertainment of those who can't do anything about it anyway. Knowing about terror attacks helps nobody, scares people disproportionately, raises blood pressure and helps terrorists achieve their goals.

As soon as I read the name "Bill Calcutt", I knew that he was going to take a topic on terrorism, and twist it to present his left wing, humanitarian point of view.

Bill's ridiculous premise, is that fighting terrorism, we are doing exactly what the terrorists want. So, we should stop fighting them.

?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?-?.

Nice bit of logic there Bill. But only Arjay or the ABC could agree with that one.

BIll, old mate. In your fantasy world where everybody is really nice, except for a few American leaders, the Nazis, and perhaps a few Muslims (who you think don't represent the majority), people like yourself invited Muslims into western societies.

The problem is, that these people do not think any way like you, or even me. They really do think that thei Islamic way is superior to outr western ways even though their civilisation is a failure. One reason they think that way, is because of people like you, Bill. People with your own mindset can always be relied upon to continually attack their own successful civilisation, blaming it for every woe that ever befell the world, while studiously avoiding any criticism of the failed civilisation. All in the name of showing the failures that it is not their fault.

Most terrorists in the world are Muslims, Bill. That is because their own holy book tells them that they should spread Islam by violence, and that those who do just that are the best Muslims. It is not the sort of religion that you would want to import into a peaceful society.

(continued)

But idiots like you wanted to display your "tolerance" and now we are paying for it. We are paying for it through increased crime and very high rates of welfare dependency. We are paying for it through being involved in another war that we could have avoided if we had discriminated against Muslims for our migrants. And we are paying for it through reductions in our civil liberties caused entirely by importing people who we can not trust to not poison or blow us up in the name of their non existent god.

So spare me the twisted logic and humanitarian whining, Bill. People like you stuffed up and true to form, you are now trying tom shift the blame onto the people who have the deal with the problem you created.

Whatever you think about terrorism, Islamic terrorism in particular
one factor seldom gets a mention.

It is in fact a war, declared in the Koran, to be against all infidels.
It was declared around 700 AD and has been ongoing since then.
Various invasion attempts into Europe have failed and the events of the
last 30 years or so have forced a change of tactic and the Islamists
have rtesorted to an old method of using a smiling immigration technique.

The Islamists are now in Britain revealing their intentions.
The Islamification of London, Leicester and Birmingham will be first,
then the rest of the country.
They make no secret of the plan.
