The misdirected policies of the Abbott government are turning young people who need a little help from a long term asset into a current liability.

Kelpie, you will never get 'common sense' from many contributors to this forum.
Individual goes one step further and states "She is simply an ignorant academic who believes wasting other peoples' money on wasters will result in an overnight Nirvana."

How nasty and small minded is that comment Individual ?
You think all people who have had more education than you are 'ignorant academics', and all people who are younger than you should be dragged off to 'military camps' so they can learn to think more like you?
What rubbish!

As far as the issues re young unemployed people, I hope the 6 months without welfare payments for people under 30 will never come to pass, or we will see a massive rise in crime from some of these desperate people.

I agree we shouldn't pay the dole to able-bodied people who don't try to find work , but I am also aware there are people out there who will NEVER be able to pick up or hold down a job.
Australia can afford to pay for welfare payments for these few.
It's either that, or we pay for more jails....

Killarny - Well said, I totally agree with everything you said ! Bellicose ego based people with their stories of great victories over far superior obstacles than the average mere mortal could possibly handle advising others to follow in their very large footsteps ! But I ask myself how is it possible to follow the lead of such a superhuman being when most of us are just your average normal human being with all the average frailties it entails ! All I can say is be thankful for all the breaks you get in life even with your superhuman prowess and show some compassion to those who try but don't quite succeed !

Killarney,
My Irish Great Grandmother, died just a few months after I was born.
My mother recounted how she'd lived through the depression, and two world wars, to which she lost seven boys!
She, not too uncommon in those days, being around twenty years younger, survived her husband by around two decades.
And given a widowed daughter, who worked as a barmaid; and three grand children, she worked around the house and the yard until well into her eighties.
My mother told me how she would be out in the yard with a shovel, at 85, digging with a prolapsed womb, preparing a garden bed for the spuds, that was more or less their staple diet.
And as she dragged her old tried body back inside, barely able to walk, or drag the shovel, she was so tired.
My mother, who was extremely fond of Gran, often remarked, you shouldn't work so hard Nan, it'll kill you!
To which Her Grandmother would invariably reply, to be sure, hard work never killed anyone, just the want of it.
We have a generation of kids/young people, who have become soft, for want of a little hard work.
And would be better and less demanding, if they were toughened up a bit, or worked for their (free) money.
My father and Uncles, those who survived, worked for the dole, grubbing out noxious weeds, that couldn't be controlled by any other means!
And then even that relief work petered out after six months!
When I was a teenager, dole money was only enough for a few papers, a few stamps and some tram money, to get you to the job interview.
We could very easily be facing another even worse Great Depression, with its soup kitchens, tent cities and mile long dole queues.
Those who have been toughened up and made more self reliant, with some real if at times, very menial work, will be the never quit, never beaten ones, who not only survive, but eventually earn a decent living, or realize their dreams!
Rhrosty.

Suseonline,
What else should people who are hanging off our apron & don't make sense be called ? Dis I say all People ? No ! I said those who are ignorant. Stop twisting my words.

dragged off to 'military camps' What don't you understand by non military national service ?
Are you so devoid of integrity that you even feel forced to twist those words also ? Are you so devoid of integrity that you fight tooth & nail for our society not to get better by asking people to put some effort into becoming better citizens by helping them to a healthier mentality rather than your mentality of gimme, gimme, gimme ? you remind me of a nurse I once worked with, she always waffled on about the good work nurses do but if the pay was one hour out she spent all day chasing those few dollars whilst the patients were calling for her. That's not a caring nature at all, that's doing something just for money.

Then you'll be able create your great socialist utopia without our money and industry.

Make you are quite simple minded and tell us how much of my money you get each year?

Trapie you like all you dopey socialist miss the point.

My success, and I am very proud of it, isn't built on chance or fortunate opportunity.

And how do you know I'm not gay, you presumptious little squirt.?

My success was not built on machoism nor disregard for those who worked for me. Again you presumptious little squirt.

It was built on the simple fact I worked so hard. Today I have employees who also work hard. They earn well above award and value all the opportunites that are opening up for them.

That you see my pride in my own achievements as something to be ridiculed and denigrated with personal invective shows two things.
One you are envious of the rewards earned by of those who choose to work hard.
Two you will never be prepared to nor expect others to do as I have done.

Those things mean you lack aspiration and don't want others to aspire either.

You dunce, today it is very easy for anyone to work hard and attain the same rewards I did.It is simpletons like you who think it isn't possible and make excuses for those lazy grizzlers who have conned you, that are ensuring many youngsters don't have to try and will be consigned to sucking from an ever diminishing public tit.

Look at Spain and Greece. That is where your attitudes will lead them. And mate I don't have a uni degree. I bet you have and sit on your arse in some unpreductive job earning more than you are worth. I probably fund that as well.
