Is the ABC's business model sustainable? : Comments

By Barry Spinks, published 15/4/2014

If the ABC's business model is as flawed as it appears, how will it withstand an efficiency dividend?

...Obvious to all "Out Here", is that journalism in it's true form of imparting knowledge to the uneducated, is dead; subservient to the status quo!

...Those stepping outside of the circle; Julian Assange,Peter Greste, and all others with a name that fit the group called
"Whistleblowers", constitute the brave among us prepared to sacrifice their personal comfort zones, to expose the corruption and scams in our society, which reduce it's collective relevance and meaning to the "ordinary man"!

...Where is any of the above ethic in the ABC? Ideology has continually crept into this organisation, rendering it non-representative and exposing it's complete capture by radical political elements.

...Above anything, Abbott should hose out the management of this failed organisation and reconstitute it!

The ABC has shown itself incapable of correction, incapable of adhering to its charter.

It was Australias greatest cultural national treasure, but now its a sheltered workshop for people whose minds never matured from their undergraduate humour and sophomoric politics.

Shut it down.

Fire them all.

Sell the real estate.

Given nobody wants to commit political suicide, the ABC will go on.
However, Barry, you with your very obvious accounting skills and forensic due diligence abilities, should be asked to run a financial ruler over Aunty, to see and personally sign off on, where there are any real savings!
I'm sure that the overseas service, could be greatly improved and earn much more, particularly with regard to China, which is yet to allow Aunty any domestic broadcast rights within China?
Programs which could rate very highly there are travel Australia docos and top rating shows like Q+A?
Albeit, perhaps with a more polite presenter, who interrupts far less, and isn't quite so opinionated, hosting the show!
I'd also want to exclude others, who only seem to see the show, as an opportunity, as a personal political platform or air their views, when others have been actually invited to also speak.
To that end, I like participants to be placed in soundproof boxes, and have their microphones turned on, only when they're actually asked to speak, and then for a reasonable even handed time limit?
I'm sure some outraged dilettantes, with mouths opening and closing like drowning fish, after their time limit had expired, would be even more entertaining than some of the wit of some of the more hilarious, invitees.
Along with more Polly free nights please!
After that, I think Aunty is one of the few platforms for local talent and or production, and needs to be retained, and could be, if less money were wasted elsewhere?
I'm sure there'd be some big bucks to be earned if Aunty could broadcast some of our major sports into Asia. The advertising could be limited to what presenters use and or wear, along with hoarding.
That would and could help market some of our greener cleaner produce, and earn millions for our domestic economy!
We need to stay tuned in on Australian benefits, not just the pocket books of a few already seriously advantaged, empire building, fat cats!

In my view the culture and left wing bias at the ABC has reached an extreme and the ABC no longer fulfils its charter. Financial restrictions may force some changes, but not where they are really needed. The ABC should be sold off and therefore be subject to real competition. A small section could be maintained at taxpayer expense for broadcasting parliament and factual national news without political bias. It is now time for action.

One figure I would like to see: how much does it cost the taxpayer to put one hour of ABC programming in front of one person, on average? My guess is that it's considerably more than it would cost to simply post out DVDs to the dwindling user base: and certainly much more than merely providing them with internet links to the same material.
