Politics wins the day: Nauru expels judges, Australia stays quiet : Comments

By Rebecca Ananian-Welsh, published 31/1/2014

Just as the motivations behind the expulsions of Law and Eames were political, so has been the response. Nauru plays a central role in the Abbott government’s asylum seeker strategy.

Unfortunately, there is very little that Australia can actually do, short of sending in our troops to invade Nauru. That might happen if there is a complete breakdown of law and order, but unless the Australian government sees Nauru as a threat to our country, it won't happen.

We really have no right to tell them what to do, and in the present dealings with illegal immigrants, we need to tread warily.

Tell me this:

where is the "LINE" which the Left seems to use when deciding why US in Iraq/Afganistan is wrong and immoral etc., but that somehow we should but-into the NARU political issue, just as we butted-into the East Timor independence issue?

How is it decided when western interference is either OK, moral and right, but also when and how is it decided that we are "WANTED" by the natives?

If Naru people did not want AUS to help/interfere even if this meant leaving some dictator to kill his people, should we stick to this like the left expect the west to do in middle-east and Africa?
