The reason why successive State and Federal Labor and Liberal governments have by passed the self appointed aboriginal leaders with their endless calls for taxpayer funded "self determination" is because the leaders have proven to be extremely corrupt, and that they seem to have a vested interest in keeping aboriginal people at the bottom of society where they can be their taxpayer sinecured managers.

Labor and Liberals don't agree on much. But both sides of parliament know that giving self appointed aboriginal leaders access to public funds is a sure way to find them with their fingers in the till. And the alcohol fuelled violence towards aboriginal women and children will continue because the only responsible aboriginal leaders who really care about the dysfunction of aboriginal communities are the ones who support the government in this matter.

As usual, the author of this argument couches his self interest in high minded principles and a holier than thou attitude. Such argument would appeal to the more intellectually challenged posters on OLO, but those of us with a few brains can see it for the fig leaf that it is.

Yes, indeed, 'self-determination' has been a fraud: what did it mean other than whites would do more and more for people, doing the sorts of things they could easily do for themselves ? did it mean people would actively try to build their communities ? No. Was there enough funding for any and every genuine purpose, and a few others besides ? Yes. Was it used for its intended purpose ? No.

Meanwhile, a quiet revolution of sorts has been going on, as an aspirational class has seized the ample opportunities available over the last thirty years. Aspirationals 100, drop-kicks nil.

And what's the bet that very few of those deaths were what they call 'perinatal', i.e. infant deaths around the time of birth, i.e. in hospital, with proper care, or within the first month ? So often, so bloody often, babies are neglected and come back to the hospital within the first three to six months, malnourished, with gastro, otitis media, all avoidable causes of hospitalisation.

And also what's the bet that the vast majority of those hospitalisations - and deaths - are out in the holy of holies, the 'communities' ? Where BS 'self-determination' rules ?

Meanwhile, in the cities, amongst the aspirational class, I'll also bet there are hardly any hospitalisations or deaths. At this stage I am a sceptic about this mob but am prepared to wait and see before I travel the road to Damascus with them. Many false promises and illusions from earlier times by Aboriginal 'leaders' all failed in their responsibilities. But maybe this mob will be different. Maybe. Somehow my gut feelings are that this mob will focus on big ideas and big budget productions. Therein remains the nub where the problems begin. Aboriginal people [from my experience - 30+ yrs] just want to look after their own families and not the whole community, more investment at local levels through micro loans is needed, low risk, low interest rates, small family ventures. Just saying.
