Thank you for that, Neve Gordon. As you say, at least the mayor is being honest. This doesn't excuse him, of course. As nor would a paedophile be excused merely be admitting his inclinations.
A clearer demonstration of the difference between Zionism and Judaism would be hard to find.
And I do wonder if such an admission of racism would be accepted anywhere else in the world. There are some Islamophobes here in Oz who go close, but to my knowledge none of them hold power. Hopefully this will not change in the coming election, although I do note with some worry that the Libs have directed preferences to the controversial anti-Islam Rise Up Australia Party ahead of Labor and the Greens in the Victorian Senate race

How ineffably tragic to read a Jewish official's statement which demands racial purity with no Arab inhabitants.
Millions died so that such xenophobic statements and views might never be heard again.

Judaism is exclusionary. It limits membership to children of Jewish mothers or those who go through an arduous and arbitrary acceptance assessment and initiation process. It's a significant difference from either of the other two Abrahamic religions which both proselytise for and baptise converts readily.

@Antiseptic
About Judaism being exclusionary: Not necessarily, and certainly not continuously during history. Consider the conversion of the Khazars from central Asia and the Berbers from north Africa.
And anyway, exclusionary or not, that is not the question. The question is can modern Israel treat all its citizens, not to mention its neighbours, as fully equal and deserving human beings. From the evidence to date, and certainly according to the Mayor of Upper Nazareth, the answer has to be No.
And to blame all the present troubles on the Arabs' unwillingness to accept Israel, consider the Zionist-inspired exclusionary nature of the founding of Israel, and ask how could they be accepting when they were excluded from the beginning from their own homes and lands.
There were many Orthodox Jews who spoke against the establishment of the state of Israel because they recognised the threat such an entity would pose to Judaism itself. That they were prescient must now be glaring obvious.
