The proximity of the recent outbreak of TB in PNG represents a growing concern to Australia. The spread of this disease has meant it has become the second largest infectious killer. This is particularly concerning for travelers who may come into contact with the disease, and bring home more than just a few souvenirs.

It is easy to be lulled into a sense of complacency, not only due to our relative geographic isolation but the fact that such an age old disease like TB still poses a threat. As Maree rightly, notes, there needs to be continual support and funding to tackle this disease. Australia is trying to promote itself onto the international stage, however before it can successfully do that, it has to act like a global citizen.
