A land of hope and dreams : Comments

By Julie Bishop, published 27/9/2012

The economy was in free-fall. Inflation was running at nearly 200 per cent. I recall handing over several one thousand Zimbabwean dollar notes to buy one small chocolate bar.

I must ask why the coalition under Howard with Bush and Blair, did not "liberate" Zimbabwe in the classic Afghanistan and Iraq pattern?
Perhaps because there was no oil there?

The people that need to hang their heads in shame are the South Africans, who stood by while a mass murdering dictator, appointed himself to power!
They had only to drive in with their armour and air support; and Magabee's reign of terror, would have been over! Probably without a shot fired?
If the Brits have any blame? It was with the sanctions they applied to bring a white govt down.
I'll bet my house, if the average Zimbabwean could have a choice between a very racist/tribal mass murdering Magabee and Smith's Rhodesian govt, they would surely opt for the latter; given, Zimbabwe was once the jewel of Africa, with wealth and supermarket shelves groaning under plenty.
Sure it was not perfect, but the inherent decency, with which the English ruled, was far and away, demonstrably, vastly better than that which replaced it. There were schools that taught everybody and basic health care for all, and nobody staved.
Yes, one would expect the current Prime minister to be involved in daily discussions regarding his family, whose lives could be snuffed out at the whim of a decidedly demented, mass murdering monster! Little wonder he now trips around begging for sanctions to be lifted?
There is no way that the sanctions can be lifted. It would send a signal that would reverberate around the world, that said, it's perfectly okay to murder innocent unarmed civilians, in their hundreds and thousands!
Moreover, if you are belligerent enough, we might even try to appease or reward you for having done so?
For mine, it would be a completely covert black op, that went in posing as tourists, business men, cricket/rugby players, diamond buyers etc/etc; and, disposed of the garbage!
Rhrosty.

Not only have they found oil in Zimbabwe but recently they've discovered that it has the world's second largest reserves of platinium which is worth more than gold.

Zimbabwe people definitely need to be liberated from their wealth by Western Imperialists.

Arjay,
very philosophic indeed but do you know of what else Zimbabweans can sell in order to get off the ground again ?
