What a shallow analysis of a complex issue whose history is the key to understanding why the 34 miners were shot and killed. The historical roots of this problem are firstly the apartheid era (as Pilger says) but even more important is the global response to apartheid. Virtually every nation on the planet imposed economic sanctions on South Africa in an attempt to destroy the apartheid government. In the end, when that government crumbled and was replaced by a majority-rule, democratic one, its new leaders found that the economy of South Africa has been so severely impacted upon by the boycott that it didn't have the economic ability to provide its millions of poor people with water, shelter, electricity and all the other basic facilities that people like Singer (and myself) take for granted.
In other words, our response to the apartheid government was wrong and we - the western world and progressive thinkers such as Pilger - were and still are responsible for the unacceptable plight of the mass of South Africa's citizens.
