The dreadful dilemma over Iran : Comments

By Julie Bishop, published 16/8/2012

Reports from Israel confirm that the government is actively considering its options and this is the subject of public debate.

The first option seems the rational one Julie!
But when has the leadership in Iran been seen to be rational, or charting a course for peaceful co-existence?
Israel's dilemma is further compounded by the still unresolved Palestinian conundrum, which it needs to address and entirely resolve, before it considers any of its options with regard to Iran?
Iran doesn't seem to be hurt by the sanctions; given it is still able to export most of its oil production?
Iran seems to hate both Israel and America, with a rare passion and may well be willing to attack a now nearly bankrupt USA with a pre-emptive strike with a nuclear missile?
Believing that a bankrupt America wouldn't respond at this time, for fear of a sabre rattling Russia?
Or go beyond a very robust rhetorical response etc, for fear of a full blown nuclear conflict?
We for our part would be very wise to isolate ourselves as a completely neutral Island of sanity; in a world gone mad?
And set forth with all possible haste, to secure our own energy independence ASAP, without which we would be virtually defenceless and face extreme hardship, economic collapse and Great Depression like conditions, should either the Straights of Homuz or and the Suez canal be either threatened or closed.
Besides, we need our own very low cost energy independence to fully resuscitate our almost terminal manufacturing sector and indeed what remains of our home-based defence industries.
As always, the best strategy is to hope for the best and prepare for the worst!

Iran is believed to be developing a long range ballistic missile capable of striking anywhere in Israel. It is also believed that Iran is developing a nuclear warhead for these long range missiles, the time frame for completion is said to be about six weeks.
Israel appears to be debating/contemplating an airstrike on these nuclear warhead/missile sites which they believe must take place within this time frame.
It is also believed the US navy has stepped up its presence in the Persian and Oman Gulfs by the positioning of aircraft carriers to the region.
Observers believe that Israel will deliver the missile base airstrike within the six week time frame, whilst the presence of the increased US navy will deter Iran from serious retaliation escalation on the surrounding Gulf countries and Israel.
This cat and mouse diplomacy is very unsettling for the region and the
world generally, the question asked:-
"Will Australia become involved? Is it in Australia's interests to become involved? Bearing in mind China is Irans largest trading partner"?

The author of this piece is the Australian politician who claimed that the Australian Government had been guilty of forging the passports of other countries. This was meant as a defense for Israel forging Australian passports in one of its extra judicial assassinations.

It is known that Israel has between 75 and 400 nuclear warheads with the capacity to deliver them, and that it is the 5th largest nuclear systems power in the world. It is also known that Israel is not a signatory of the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Israel has a history of attacking other countries.

Iran does not have a nuclear weapon. Iran is a signatory of the NPT. Iran does not have a history of attacking other countries.

If Iran did in the future develop the capacity to produce and deliver a nuclear weapon what are the chances that it would use it against Israel when the likely result would be retaliation from Israel and possibly the USA resulting in the annihilation of their country and its people?

If Israel and other nuclear powered countries want to deter others from developing this capacity, a good starting point would be for them to reduce their stockpiles.

I would like to know where Julie gets her intelligence. Iran is months if not weeks to enriching uranium to reach weapons grade level? It was only six months ago that America was talking in terms of years what has happened since then? As far as Israeli intelligence is concerned it has been whining about Iran's nuclear program reaching weapons grade within six months since the mid 1990's. Israel's credibility when it comes to Iran is less than zero, America is just slightly above zero.

America's inept Secretary of State, the invisible Hilary Clinton has taken George W Bush's play book at justifying America's invasion of Iraq verbatim simply substituting Iran for Iraq and obviously believes that the world population are so ignorant that they can be fooled a second time. War is a result of failed diplomacy it is said examine America’s record.

It has invaded Afghanistan, Iraq and involved itself in a dirty war with part of the Pakistani military. It has invaded and conquered Libya and has laid sanctions on Syria and Iran (sanctions are considered a declaration of war).

No movement between Israel and Palestine the last, at the UN Security Council, turned into pure farce when Palestine took America’s foreign policy on the Israeli/Palestinian issue turned it into a resolution and presented it to the Security Council. America used its veto to prevent it from passing. In other words America vetoed its own policy that has been in place since 1967!

All three options as listed are untenable and though acceptable in varying degrees to the West all three are highly unlikely to be taken up by Iran. However a fair solution would be that America and its client states withdraw troops that encircle Iran on the ground and that Israel open up its nuclear stockpile to IAEA inspection and that it becomes a signatory of the non-proliferation treaty. America must withdraw all sanctions as soon as Iran puts its entire nuclear program under IAEA auspices.

That is a far more balanced and realistic solution to the current highly volatile situation today.
