Wouldn't it be wonderful if the Games could only take place between countries that weren't invaders, occupiers, droners, imperialists, renderers, torturers, etc, and didn't use hideous weapons like cluster bombs, depleted uranium, napalm, phosphorous explosives, etc, and put people in cages.
It would be even better if only peaceful nations could participate. After all, the Games were always intended to improve the prospects for peace rather than become a drug-filled competition between warmongering nations. http://dangerouscreation.com Posted by David G, Monday, 2 July 2012 12:35:40 PM

And wouldn't it be nice if good ole' boy Vic paid a minutes respect for the tens of thousands of innocent people slaughtered by Israel since then.

There is no such thing as a peaceful nation just about every nation on earth has a bloody war or massacre in it’s history. And if the past is anything to learn from they will have more such events in their future. Posted by CHERFUL, Monday, 2 July 2012 8:40:32 PM

If Marilyn and David could put their personal prejudice views aside for one minute they may see that they have missed the point. These were Olympians killed at an Olympic event. That is why they should be remembered at the Olympic games.

When Olympians have been killed in the line of their Olympic duty, including training, they have been honoured by the IOC. This is what was done for the Georgian athlete Nodar Kumaritashvili. The eleven Israeli athletes were killed in the line of their Olympic duty too - in the Olympic Village no less.
The Olympics have been political at least since Hitler hosted them in 1936, and to pretend otherwise is laughable. Countries have boycotted them and in 1972 Palestinian terrorists used them as a platform to publicise their cause. They did so by murdering eleven people. It is morally wrong not to honour those people. Posted by Leah, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 5:44:12 PM

Fortunately the British-Australian-US treatment of Jews has been vastly more tolerant than those in Central-Eastern Europe - with the most evil treatment in the past being in Germany and Russia.
Politics and prejudice are complex. The following reflects that.
The predictable anti-Jewishness of the extreme Right (in its National Socialist guise intolerant of communism AND capitalism) is well documented but anti-Jewishness from the Left is too easily forgotten.
In that regard Snorri's Laws of Anti-Capitalist Antisemitism (coming from the Extreme Right and the Extreme Left) need to be repeated:
1. not all anti-capitalists are antisemites, but over 99% of antisemites are anti-capitalists.
2. all anti-capitalist movements, if left to themselves, become increasingly antisemitic over time.
Unfortunately Leftwing antisemitism is becoming acceptable in some corners of Australian politics.
