Tensions high as the United Nations debate land agreements between Israel and Palestine.

Mr Singer said today...
.....Ms DiCarlo offered little comfort to the Palestinian Arabs when she stated: “Let me also reiterate that, like every U.S. administration for decades, we do not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity. “ This was a far cry from the misleading claim often made by the Palestinian Arabs and other countries that the settlements are illegal in international law, says Mr. Singer.......

Are we playing at semantics here? As a lawyer, from whatever university from whatever country Mr. Singer owes his allegiance, surely even in written in Yiddish, this would mean the same thing. Representing otherwise questions someone’s legal knowledge.
And then, as is the norm, he quotes the Bush Roadmap, emanating from the worst president in the history of the US and fondly quotes a letter from Bush to the infamous Israeli terrorist Sharon, (from Sabra and Shatila fame, never to be forgotten), which, with the source being Bush, can be safely disregarded.

For a writer who purports to be an “Australian” lawyer, who writes exclusively for Israel’s propaganda machine, any reader has to deduce that there is no national conflict in his mind as to who he really is, so single-minded are his utterings. The enthusiasm in quoting people like Bush, Sharon, et al and the lack of empathy for a race of people who have been inhumanely crushed into the sand, adds weight to this statement.

An honest point of view? Never.

We should remind Mr. Singer that by selectively quoting items that serve his distorted purpose, he is making it appear that the US is the whole UN. It is not, having just one vote in the General Assembly. While on this subject, how convenient it is that the questionable state of Israel, always represented in print by Mr. Singer, has ignored more UN Resolutions than any other country in the history of that once-august body and in a cowardly way, Israel spends all its time hiding behind the skirts of the US and uses, by blackmail and corrupt practices, the unfair veto of the US in the Security Council.

rexw,

Cite which international law (chapter and verse) establishes the illegality of Jewish settlements on the West Bank.

You now have the opportunity to back up your claim.

Danielle,

try having a read of the Geneva Convention. You might learn something.

I think Israel is a signatory to that piece of internation convention isn't it?

Indeed.

Read:

UN Security Resolution 242

Analyses by prominent jurist:

Stephen Schwebel, (formerly President of the International Court of Justice) American Journal of International Law, April 1970; Justice in International Law: Selected Writings (Cambridge: CUP. 1994)

Professor Eugene Rostow, American Journal of International Law, 1990, vol.84; New Republic April 23, (1990); New Republic, October 21,(1991)

Julius Stone, Israel and Palestine (1982)

Also ... the analysis by Alan Baker who participated in the negotiation and drafting of various agreements of the Oslo Accords.

Incidentally, I am not in favour of Israeli settlements, albeit they are legal.

An aside: those who promote the idea of 'one state' can hardly object to these settlements ... can they?

Or, perhaps those promoting the 'one state' also fall in behind the Hamas that all traces of Jews will be anihilated. ... Then undoubtedly would come Bahai, Bedouin, Druze and Gypy ... and other groups who seek sanctuary in Israel, indeed have their relevant HQ there.

Sounds very familiar.
