Some choose to believe that the Spirit moved people in the past in a certain way. The truth of that is probably unknowable.
However, the significance of Pentecost to a multicultural nation is a reasonable question, theist or not.

Good question. Pentecost is about all people sharing the gifts of the Spirit. Claiming the continent in the name of the Spirit for a particular king doesn't sit well with that, nor does declaring Terra Nullius.
