Strange but true, the theory is out there. Google 'south land of the holy spirit' to see. People are free to believe or disbelieve it; the point is Pentecost (or 'Whitsunday') has meaning for everyone, and a particular meaning for Australia.

And has anyone actually checked Torres's log for 1606, to see if it contains an entry: "Turned back by Holy Spirit"?
...[CRICKETS]... No, I thought that might be too rational for a theist to think of. Posted by Jon J, Monday, 13 June 2011 6:43:38 PM

Torres probably didn't write: 'Sailed through strait, didn't see Australia once' either. But what would that prove?
Some choose to believe that the Spirit moved people in the past in a certain way. The truth of that is probably unknowable. However, the significance of Pentecost to a multicultural nation is a reasonable question, theist or not. Posted by Cuz, Monday, 13 June 2011 7:29:18 PM

Did the Aboriginal spirit triumph in those instances?

Good question. Pentecost is about all people sharing the gifts of the Spirit. Claiming the continent in the name of the Spirit for a particular king doesn't sit well with that, nor does declaring Terra Nullius. Pentecost seems to be a work in progress; every time we break down a barrier to mutual understanding we get closer. Having a universal language helps but it's not the whole story.

cuz said...""Pentecost..is about all people
sharing the gifts..of the Spirit."" thats a darn good way to look at it so what were..[are]..the hiden gifts from THESE lands peoples we are a part of the land like our hand is a part of our body inseperable we are each here to 'be'..gods gift to each other [by seeking to know other..we know more of the one good..[god] we se in this land first people a people who were healthy/strong..caring/sharing they KNEW..we dont poop into water yet when xtains came...we were told that thats the civil thing to do this xtian way of thoughtlessly following has many bad fruits...witness the murder of rivers/seas oceons the latest is to kill off our own living roots vents on the bottum of the strait..that have rich mineral content [where they pulverise a whole LIVING ego system.. to extract the value..then pump the dead slurry back under the waters..to polute it ALL..unseen this couldnt happen in the dreamtime..[turned nightmare] cause NO_ONE was allowed to take..more than half of anything but now we got greedy taking it all we had laws for breeding[skin groups] we are ONLY ruled by FULL concensus [if we dont ALL agree..its just not on] if you break our laws your made an outcast and marks put upon your body indicate the crime there is much to share but we need only look back at our roots and take ONLY the best bits..not the pain..hurt murder [that clearly isnt GOOD from god..if its not good for ALL..its not of god] thus good isnt a good gift we are asked to share our goodness and attempt to subvert our darkness but the main law..is dont murder [ie war is a sin..get it] the living good/god is all living loving each-other with grace mercy forgiveness [or you will be disowned].. indeed many MATERIALISTS..claiming to be of christ... dont serve christ[spirit]..or serve..the wrong spirit we all know good/fruit from bad... but even bad/fruit..should be given a chance to lift its game dont cast stones.. because stones can kill..[ie MURDER].. love god by loving neighbour Posted by one under god, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 10:54:21 AM

This must be one of the most unmitigated load of garbage that has ever been featured on OLO.
He describes European colonialism and imperialism as the "bringing of the light" and that "god decided its fate" as a justification for all of the inevitable slaughters. Pedantic as usual applied christian politics 101 http://www.dartmouth.edu/~spanmod/mural/panel13.html http://www.jesusneverexisted.com/cruelty.html Plus additional references: The American Holocaust http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/History/American_Holocaust.html Columbus & Other Cannibals http://nas.ucdavis.edu/Forbes/CANNIBALS.html Plus check out God Is Red, and Custer Died For Your Sins by Vine Deloria Jnr. Most of the above is in the context of USA history, but the deadly genocidal force thus described was dramatized all over the world. The colonial conquest of Australia was relatively undramatic because there not many "aborigines" here to be dispossessed and EXTERMINATED (as there were in the Americas) Meanwhile it was Christian Europe that gave the entire world both World Wars. Supposedly part of the process of the "bringing of the light",and of "god deciding the fate" of humankind, or "god's plan" altogether. Onward christian soldiers forever marching into war. Remember that George W Bush justified the invasion of Iraq because "god" told him to. He also initially justified it as a crusade. Posted by Ho Hum, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 10:56:41 AM

I agree, Ho Hum. This has to be the biggest load of bollocks I've read at On Line Opinion.
Sure, people like to attach the oddest meanings to the most banal of events, but this is verging on Dan Brown-style inanity. Fairy tales for the credulous, nothing to see here. Posted by morganzola, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 11:17:05 AM

I think it was the Christians who invented the wheel.
And sliced bread. The internet. Oh the list of Christian accomplishments is infinite. Wish my patience with them was the same. Posted by Ammonite, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 12:37:19 PM

Maybe the words 'Continued over the page' have some ambiguity in a computer format? Or is that too ironic?

No. Next!
"If the theory holds water..."
There is no 'theory'. This is something you just made up. The correct word for it is 'fantasy'.
