Australian responsibility: cluster bomb carnage in Iraq : Comments

By Chris Doran, published 3/3/2011

Australia is completely implicated in the use of cluster bombs by our allies.

Cluster bombing, along with allegations of torture of Australian citizens through 'extraordinary renditions', will one day come back to haunt us when some high military or government official from those days will be stopped at some European airport and be taken away to assist with some questions over certain international human rights violations to which Australia is a signatory.

Will the government of the day then move heaven and earth to ensure maximum legal defence counsel, or will they just be 'thrown to the wolves'?

This is a very important article that deserves wider circulation. The chances of their being an inquiry in Australia, much less prosecution of those legally liable is unfortunately exceedingly slim. I agree with the previous commenter that it will likely fall to other nations, and in particular Spain and Italy that have shown a willingness to defy the Americans and put war criminals and others who breach international law on trial.
The only comment that I would add is that what has been said about Iraq applies, ceteris paribus, to Afghanistan where the invasion was a breach of Article 4 of the UN Charter, not saved by Article 51. War crimes, to which Australia is a party are being committed there on a daily basis also.
With the Rudd/Gillard regime in lock step with the previous Howard government don't hold your breath for any accountability.

You are not wrong. It is all a conspiracy. Why, personally I think Howard is an alien who wants to kill all humans, starting with those not of pale complexion because it amuses him.

Really, really, really.

With respect to "war crimes", the left has long since left the building.

Thanks for a timely article, Chris Doran. Chickens are indeed coming home to roost.

These "Act Globally, Think Locally" folks are finding their locale increasingly restricted. GWB risks arrest in Switzerland, Tzipi Livni risks arrest in UK. Who will be the first Prominent Australian to discover the doors are closing for them?

See...in war the issue THE OBJECTIVE - is kill as many of enemy as you can and kill them quickly without pity, brutally without regard to anything but killing them. Make him decide that to fight on is the wrong thing.

You have no idea what war is. I do. And so do all those who went thru WW1 and WW2. You think and expect war to be a video game

Wake up.

Mission accomplished in Iraq. We kicked their ass and won the war

Next.
