The United States has been too slow on Egypt : Comments

By Kevin Boreham, published 2/2/2011

At 82 Mubarak was not going to last long, but the US has failed to plan for what might come next, making the future's imminent arrival even more dangerous.

The Obama government was so bent on being different to President Bush that they moved from supporting people to supporting regimes .. and kowtowing to dictators .. even bowing and grovelling.

So now it's difficult to change to supporting democratic people protests .. as Bush did, when you have done so much crawling to dictators everywhere

Well everyone (?) on the left, wanted change .. they got it .. so what now?

Clinton and Obama are looked upon internationally as fools, which is appropriate when you move from being feared and respected to being seen as dolts who don't understand international politics .. hey Obama, how about we all sit down and have a chat, isn't that supposed to be the way .. see how good that looks now?

Wait till the next republican US government (?) to mop up the mess, since everyone feels empowered to ignore the US completely at the moment. Let's get some fear and respect of the US back in the world .. at least it was clear who was in charge.

Does the world want America fiddling into every other nations affairs.
They have been heavily criticized for just that. The activities in Egypt have been peaceful so far, so why interupt.

The USA/Israel have been interferring in Egyptian affairs for years.Mubarak is their puppet. What many are inferring is that the USA/Egypt should have deposed Mubarak years ago and put another more palitable puppet who will keep the people poor and powerless.

The best hope for the aspirations of the people of Egypt and other Middle east autocracies is for the US not to meddle, and for democracy to prevail over theocracy.

That is also best for the rest of the world.

If the US, or someone, does not "meddle", then dictators will feel free to come down hard on democracy protestors .. as happened in Iran and China

If they do nothing, then people will accuse them of "doing nothing" about democracy .. at least President Bush made it quite clear he encouraged and would support democratic movements .. Obama is the opposite, he made it clear he will support Governments.

People were outraged when China massacred people, allegedly, at Tienanmen Square, if that were to happen again in Egypt .. who would be blamed .. the US of course.

Mind you right now it seems unlikely the Army will follow Mubarak, but if an Army strong man appeared and took over the Egyptian army .. he might decide to to do a Sadat, Mubarak, Gaddafi, Hussein, Ayatollah .. the region has a history of revolts turning into yet another distasteful regime

there is no clear indication democracy is what will transpire here .. it may just lead to another dictatorship, or something like Iran

some leadership by the most powerful country in the world would be most welcome to the skeptics amongst us of emerging (western style) democracy in the middle east

Arjay,

Globally the power of the US has come down considerably since 1948 and this should tell us that if the US were not able to find any solution bearable to the Arab and Jewish people when they were at the top of their power, there is little hope that they can be of any help from now on.

So we have to wait and bite our time. Time; the only wealth of living beings
