Direct quote from Goldberg's article when explaining the 28 (in 2000) to 481 (in 2001) rise in Anti-Muslim hate crimes:

"Regardless, 2001 was the zenith or, looked at through the prism of our national shame, the nadir of the much-discussed anti-Muslim backlash in the United States. The following year, the number of anti-Islamic hate-crime incidents (overwhelmingly, nonviolent vandalism and nasty words) dropped to 155. In 2003, there were 149 such incidents."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is he implying that hate crimes are more or less ok as long as they are nonviolent?

Is our world populated with extremists on all sides (religious, ideological, separatist etc) or are they just the ones with the loudest voices?
