Oil and safe drinking water are on parallel courses to depletion - a scarcity that will lead to starvation, disease and warfare.

This article is typical of the muddled thinking often encountered in this area. Both floods and droughts are due to climate change? In the same area? the glaciers are shrinking dramatically yet there is no more water downstream? The writer should pick one scare story and stick to it.
However, Matthew does have a point when he suggests that human messing with river systems have caused problems - they have - and the Chinese must bear a lot of the blame. There is evidence that the Chinese build dams purely for the sake of building dams, much as developers here build shopping malls but without having to worry about whether the project makes an economic sense.
There are ways of making money out of the development itself.

Proffitts of doom, I'm sick of them.

I first heard oil would all be gone by the early 80s. Good thing I didn't plan my life around that one.

So, if a peak oil scare, or a water shortage won't sell an article, I guess you combine the 2, throw in global warming, & you get to eat for a little longer.

I'd be more inclined to read a scare story about bad journalism standards.
