The air is thick with congestion … tax : Comments

By Eleanor Proust, published 19/8/2010

The ins and outs of electoral politics have blinded political parties to a sensible policy solution - a congestion tax for our cities.

Eleanor, the fact that building more roads “only leads to higher levels of traffic”, would indicate that we do not have enough roads.

Let us build more and better roads, until they cease to lead to higher levels of traffic, which would mean, when that point is reached, that we have enough roads of sufficient capacity.

The funding is easily available by cutting out government waste, particularly on fraudulent projects like climate change.

Just closing the Department of Climate Change, at present doing nothing, saves $140m per year. The billions poured into the pseudo science of proving the unprovable, anthropogenic global warming, would build a lot of roads.

The last thing our overtaxed population needs is another tax.

Leo,

The reason building new roads will never work is that the ability of the Government to supply roads will never be able to overcome ever-increasing levels of demand - particularly given that building more roads just encourages more driving.

And even if abolishing the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency was a good idea (and it isn't), $140m wouldn't even begin to cover the cost of building new roads on the scale you are contending for.

We need to address ever-growing demand, rather than endlessly increasing supply, and a congestion tax seems like a decent way to go about that.

If politicians ever get back to their original charter instead of imposing their own will on the people, we would again see that our needs of services which we give our taxes to provide are again met. At the moment it is about wealth and power not the will of the people. The climate has always been changing and giving politicians more wealth and power will not correct that. Pollution is real also and when we work on that area we will make advances for the good. We have been given a duty of care for this planet and as individuals if we did our best this nation would again be great. Don't expect others to sacrifice for you when you do not do your best tn all areas of your life. It is the little foxes that spoil the vineyard.
