I don't normally agree with Chris Abood about anything, but he's quite right about this proposed 'Data Retention Regime'. It's just as silly and intrusive as the so-called 'clean feed' Internet censorship proposal.

Quite fascinating that the first two comments are from lunatic fringe Christians who are paranoid about "communism", amongst other things. I first came across those very fanciful passages from Revelations when working with tribal people in the PNG highlands in the lead-up to the new millennium. Some idiot missionaries had preached to them about the "Last Days", and these poor people were convinced that they were going to be required to have the "mark of the Beast" tattooed on their foreheads, as I recall.

Given that this particular tribal group had only first encountered Europeans in the 1950s, I guess it's understandable they would believe this arrant nonsense preached at them by relatively rich and powerful light-skinned strangers. However, it's truly remarkable to me that people who were raised in a technologically advanced society like Australia still believe such bulldust.

Sorry to point it out, but the Government has been monitoring the internet for a lot longer than most would believe (I have seen anything up to ten years cited as being required for data retention by ISP's (supposedly for kiddie porn, but that's the thin edge of the wedge)). I remember seeing German mobile users being billed for covert surveillance - yet it accidentally appeared on their bill, instead of being just another charge.

I also recall seeing that the incidence of Police using the "no-warrant necessary" internet monitoring/mobile pinging is up several thousand percent this year (and every year for the last decade).

Honestly, please don't even assume that anything you do, say, watch, download or even write on the internet to be in any way shape or form "safe" from Government scrutiny. The amount of time, effort and money being "wasted" on this crap instead of ensuring decent sentences for the people it is supposedly aimed at, irritates the hell out of me.

Then again, I've seen the misuse of warrants, the use of "tame" JP's by QLD Police (the ones who ask NO questions, some are even employed by the Department, the CMC is supposedly investigating the gross breach of the Separation of Powers, but I won't hold my breath). I've seen and watched police abuse the hell out of their powers with postal interceptions (they don't need a warrant - even though the Feds do, despite Coco v The Queen saying the exact opposite).

I've seen QLD Police holding people for 8 hours, despite having no reason to do so (Crime Scene Warrant - so no evidence can be destroyed, so no reason to hold the person) and I've seen the Courts allow it.

This sort of invasion is already happening on some levels. It appears to be a greater extenstion of what is occurring in workplaces in regard to privacy of personal emails and websites visited.

While I don't think it will affect little Johnnies success in securing a bank loan because he visited a "balooba" site as a teen, the ojbection is, as the author states, the measure won't stop the nasties; but worse may make even the most innocent of web activity into something more.
