By Barry Cohen, published 20/5/2010

For a flag to be acceptable to most Australians it must be uniquely Australian.

"I've come to the conclusion that any serious discussion of a new flag is a waste of time until Australia becomes a truly independent nation-state.....
Until then, these discussions about a new flag will always descend into wankery, from both sides"
I agree wholeheartedly, C. J., no discussion of a new flag until we become a a truly independent nation-state. With CJ as King/President and no wankery there.

It seems you are quite right CJ- what amazes me though is how the flag debate ignites such bizarre passions, and also how totally staunchly opposed to change so many people are, seemingly out of a kneejerk reaction.

For me, the flag is like the republic in another way- show me a good design and I'll vote for it, otherwise I'll smack it down every single time till the idiots get it right.

Indeed, Hazza. I think that blairbar exemplified my point very well with his puerile response.

What about replacing the Union Jack with the Aboriginal Flag ? It would be instantly recognisable anywhere as the most beautiful flag in the world.

What's wrong with adopting a simple white flag? Then nobody would have anything to complain about....no Union flag, no Aboriginal or Torres St. Islander flag, no kangaroo, no Southern Cross.
