Population and nature – the human implications : Comments

By Aaron Bernstein, published 4/5/2010

Unless checked, the continued increase of our numbers on the planet is more than likely to result in serious consequences for human health and we risk placing short-term advantage over long-term gain at our own peril.

How can we do something about overpopulation without doing something about the religions which oppose programs to limit population? We have a contradiction. We endorse religious freedom. We also want a halt to environmental destruction and loss of biodiversity. The two are in conflict.

David f you make a very good point.
Perhaps a very simple but effective contribution to this answer is indeed to counteract the messages that contraception is a sin.

A glimpse at the birthrates of different countries do indeed reinforce the likelihood of this kind of culture.

Population and nature – the human implications?

You've all got to be kidding? you humans cant see whats going on all around the world? Model; If you put ten rats in a box, they will fight to the death for space, and if just two rats put in the same box, they will breed and multiply, plus have a clean environment to do so, and guess where we are at this point, on the road to extinction, that's all things. Of course where not eating this planet alive, wiping out the very things that we all depend on, No, I must be seeing things.

Try this on for size. ( no fish, no work, nothing green, growing deserts, foul air, poisoned water, destroyed waterways, A 100 spices going extincted day, deadly micro world being activated by temp variations, the planets new cycle) and so on, and this is just a hand-full.

The human population reduction plan. Don't laugh, your spices may depend on this action.

Lets say, the whole world just woke up, and things we now take for granted, became an alarming reality ( not f..ken likely ). One way in which humans could say their arses, is for all to stop breeding for a period of no less than five years. Now know one's going to do that, but if it was put this way.

If you want a child in that time frame, you will have to pay for it yourselves ( like most cant do that right now ) Until the age of 18.

If you wish to have a child with-in an ok time ( yet to be made ) period, you will receive all Government resources like, eg centre link and so on and this is where the stimulus package fails the people.

If the uneducated and disadvantaged were to bloom, then what will happen to the smarter Australia?

And again, another balance has been brought forward to be debated.

This of course is problematic to say the lest, but some day we all might have to face this reality in the not so distant future.

What! 44 million by 2050 lol don't make me laugh.

Australia don't have the brain to save water ( when times are good ) for the droughts ahead, and we don't have droughts in Australia do we, yawn!

Yes,yes I can hear the name calling of Hitler coming again. But the last time man felt over-crowded, WAR came calling. Remember! that was how they chopped us down the last time, so maybe its time to think of a better plan than the one I have given

Its your world.

Oh! and teach the religious bodies any-thing........... Good luck.

One billion sheep or so, and counting. remember! their going to a better place you know. Eden apparently. That,s on the NSW coast and many sheep or cows have a wonderful non-delusional exsistance there. But the drought may-also affect them as well.

'A conservative estimate puts the pace of species extinctions today on par with 65 million years ago when 50 per cent of all species went extinct, including the dinosaurs'

Yea yea more stories to justify a position. I am sure we know what happened 65 million years ago. What a joke? No wonder pseudo scientist can't be taken seriously. Thankfully their are a growing number of truth seeking scientist who reject this crap.

Imagining that we can live peacefully inside our borders, travel to other countries, over-consume products made from the rest of the world, particularly the developing world and pretend everything is okay... astounds me.

Be it populations in the future, fallen economies, credit crunch or climate change... I can only see the dire need for a 'see change' now.

We need to address human rights, change market policies and learn to use the law.

We need to address what we have pledged in the 'International agreed Millennium Development Goals and Global Commitments', be it for ourselves inside Australia or with the rest of the world.

For me the only way we are to keep populations down, forecast and maintain stability is to deal with the issue of consumerism and unfair world trade. Be it our garbage in the oceans or tax. Be it income or partnership, something has to give.

While I have vision - rural- regional and urban ideas for infrastructure and planning it is no good without the "whole" picture faced with political will and responsibility.

People need to come to Australia now.

The World refugee issue needs attention now.

The worlds uneven trade market needs to be dealt with now or the true value of capitalism will always be out of our grasp.

It is the only way we have hope to reduce war-torn-conflict and poverty - so people don't feel need to flee, their own mother lands because of conflict. To balance the world population, by working for world-wide population stability, by working for equality.

This is what the Doctors for the Environment Australia wrote with regard to "Environmental Refugees".

For myself, I am amazed how urgent no longer means urgent. That so many millions and millions of mothers and children are allowed to float in crisis as we bystand and watch - scrap about immigration policies as if we are the ones that have lost the bone .

What will occur if the predictions of sea-level rise begins.

Who are we without a strategy if we cant see through the field now?

How do you calculate the difference between the fair price, and the market price, in any given transaction? Show your working - or admit that you don't know what you are talking about

Peter Hume, could you please stop ordering people around? "Do this", "show that" - we don't have to do what you tell us. Just state your point of view, preferably with authoritative supporting evidence if it contradicts what someone has said, and quit bossing. You do it on all the forums.
