Anti-immigration backlash roils ties between Australia and India - part II : Comments

Australia and India: talk of a natural alliance between these English-speaking democracies proves premature.

“According to press reports, about 130 Indians in Australia, 30 of them students, have been attacked in recent years.”

As compared with the 30,000 or so murders the Indians carry out themselves each year. And, no mention of Indians killing other Indians – including innocent children – in Australia, I notice.

“… Indian students have blocked traffic and held noisy protests in Melbourne and Sydney, and last summer demonstrators in New Delhi burnt Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in effigy outside the Australian high commission.”

Yes. But when they do this sort of thing in their own country, police belt them with staves, and keep on belting them until they disperse. In Australia, the police just stand around and watch impudent foreigners making a nuisance of themselves.

As with many foreigners who criticise Australia, Sadanand Dhume drags out that old chestnut, the White Australia Policy. Well, that ended 35 years ago, but Indians still continue with their caste system, mutual intolerance and violence between Islam and Hinduism, and all against Christians and others.

And of course, always lurking, is the belief that ‘racism’ is a particularly white disease.

The best thing that Dhume reports, is that there was a 50% drop in Indian applications for student visas, which, in effect, means a 50% drop in back-door immigration.

There is nothing wrong with Australia and India being allies in trade, and defence. But, bringing the population into what the author thinks should be part of a ‘natural’ alliance is nonsense. We have nothing in common. The Raj never ruled Australia like it ruled India; our cultures are worlds apart, and Indians in Australia have demonstrated the foolishness of multiculturalism and the belief by stupid politicians that they can bring people of any race and belief into a Australia without also introducing massive problems for Australia and Australians.

Alliances are OK for governments, not for ordinary people.

Since when was India an English speaking country? Saying that India and Australia have common ground because they were both at one time ruled by the British is the height of absurdity. It's like saying that Australia and Pakistan have common ground because they both play cricket.

India and Australia are poles apart in culture, which is the basic determining factor as to whether people will get along.

My advice to all people from the subcontinent and Asia generally - Don't come to Australia for any reason.Get your education at home, get a job at home.If you are so clever then you are needed by your own country. You are neither needed or wanted in Australia

I thought it was a very good article. The desire to improve things and accord people equality isn't the preserve of any particular group or nation. Australia should have the good sense to allow uranium exports to India, which is actively developing nuclear power, and would have to be a strong candidate for helping Australia build nuclear reactors in future.

I just have to point out that Mano-awful does not speak for all Australians. People of any race or background, and especially in this context, Indians, are welcome in Australia. We are an open country and smart people from any background are wanted in Australia.

We have a lot in common with India and Indian migrants have been a success story in Australia. I thought this was a good article as well.

It is disappointing that a few mediocre and insecure people continue to post racist and exclusionary messages on various threads.

Manorina would be comforted to know that there are like minds in India. Perhaps I could write to the Hindustan Times and suggest the urgent need for India to make contraceptives freely available to all her citizens and seek international aid to fund the endeavor? That should flush out a few Cronulla protester equivalents.

For me, a Government that seemingly does little to stop the rorting of Indian students after stopping uranium exports based on a moral judgement, is somewhat worse.
