What a wonderful article. The author describes some truly inspirational women who are really making a difference in some very poor parts of the would.

She didn't explain what an awful condition a fistula is though.
A fistula is a hole. An obstetric fistula is a hole between a woman's uterus(womb) or vagina and one or more of her internal organs.

This hole occurs after an abnormally long labour that results in the constant pressure of the baby's head against the mother's pelvis which cuts off blood supply to parts of the womb and close by organs such as bladder or bowel.

This leads to holes linking these organs- so urine or faeces can leak into the womb and then out of the body through the vagina.

In countries with proper medical facilities, these women would have been given a cesarean to avoid this fate.

These poor women are then often abandoned by their families because of the terrible smell from their bodies and their infertility.

Traumatic fistula can be caused as the result of sexual violence like rape or violent sexual assaults.

I admire people who put their hands up to help people like these women. They are the true heroes of our society.

We need more articles and reports like this in mainstream media, for everyone's sake.

Yes, the conditions that these women endure are horrific. No, self belief isn't all that is needed to fix them. I'm sick of self-esteem being a magic bullet that will cure all ills. Society needs to ween ourselves off this snake oil.
