The politics of contrition : Comments

By Jennifer Wilson, published 5/3/2010

There’s no doubt some politicians are insincere some of the time. But it’s a worry if, led by our media, we believe them to be hypocritical all the time.

Madam,

It is not what the media says of politicians that count but the reality of the phenomenon ‘Politician’.

When the power was of the King, there was no question of sincerity or uncertainty. The King was the power.

The politician has no secure footing.

He/she has to get power from wherever can find it and to start has to dazzle the voter with hot air ballons.

Then in Parliament, he has to struggle to grab a ministerial position and from there get to the top one.

In this struggle, Hypocrisy is a gentle attitude compared with the continuous laying, cheating and backstabbing.

In essence, the politician is there to get the elixir of power.

Should we mention some successful politicians since the Kings?

The French Napoleons, the American Presidents, and Hitler and Stalin and Pol Pot and, …any PM that gets elected.

Every Politician is either a dictator or a failed one.

Where in this article are the partisans I knew, locked in cells, waiting to be dispatched by firing squad?

Yes Examinator I do think the LNP is MUCH better than Anna Bligh.

Nationally, I don't know. I have yet to form a firm opinion on Abbot. As I have no religion, I don't care about his.

With Turnbull, whom I thing is pretty similar to Rudd, just not as bright, they were on a par, equally disgusting. When I do form an opinion, I won't be shy about it.

Hazza, I also agree with you on the media. It always seems to be some minor issue they run with. I did not like Goss, mostly because he ripped the railway out of the bush, while increasing subsidies for rail in the city.

I thought it ludicrous that the media attacked him on the Gold Coast road thing, where his policy was the best on offer. Using the Koala lobby as cover for a NIMBY issue was very weak I thought. It confirmed my opinion of the average voter, that they fell for it.

What we must remember is most people just don't care. When I was working, & studding hard, in Sydney, over 18 years all my political feelings were picked up almost by osmosis. I never thought about it, I was just too busy, & probably, in retrospect, felt powerless, so ignored it all. I'm sure many are the same as I was.

You're wrong, Peter Hume. "Politics" is not specific to government and state. There is a politics of marriage, family, workplace, religion etc. Government and state is just one area wherein politics are practiced.

I agree with Briar Rose. Politicians are merely a small representation of most of the wider communities they live amongst.

These people in politics are often no better and no worse than many people in the rest of their community. You will find liars, cheats, adulterers, thieves, and sleazes amongst many groups of people in all walks of life.

I don't think our politicians hold a monopoly on bad behaviour.
Someone has to stand and vote for their constituents in local government and parliament.
We just have to hope for the best!
