The news of an eco-tourism and “scientific” PR stunt to Antarctica on the Russian M.V. Akademik Shokalskiy research ship cannot go unmolested. Ostensibly this was a trip to follow the route of Douglass Mawson of 100 years ago and is led by climate activist scientist Chris Turney of the University of NSW.

Its seems irony is having a great belly chuckle at both the antics and stupidity of these eco-warriors in their quest for some good news about Antarctic ice. I cannot resist joining in the mirth.

Some excuses are already emerging. It’s not ICE silly, it’s “most likely due to changing ice patters in the region”. It’s not ICE silly, it’s “predominance of unbroken fast ice”. We're certainly get more extreme events, by the bucketload! And for anyone who knows anything about weather; that’s just what you’d expect to happen in a more energised system.

Overall, it is trending slightly warmer. But the amount of variation is the first thing that is really showing up…. and it has included many severe very cold events as well as supertyphoons, floods and the like in recent years.

And let’s not forget earthquakes. They are also connected to a more energised system.

I am the first to agree that our burning of fossil fuels must cause some harm, however, in the past twenty odd years we hear in Oz have moved mountains in the form of environmental awareness and changing our ways.

Our industries are much cleaner. Our waterways don't see half the pollution they used to, this is despite the increase in industry and population of this period.

We have seen cleaner burring cars on our roads, introduced laws controlling land clearing.

How have we been rewarded, a big fat TAX, much of which goes to the coffers of the likes of the UN to feather their nests no doubt, or to fund some bottomless pit, aimed at curing the incurable such as third world population explosions, in that they say food, water and shelter is the answer, whereas birth control is where the real answer lies.

Like most people I would have no problem with the proposition that humans can, and even may already have impacted on the climate. This proposition always ends with, OK so now measure it.

This is where the alarmism has failed them, not the proposition but the measuring. The IPCC and their supporters have offered projections and forecasts, they failed to eventuate as did polar bears etc. They ended up doing more harm to their own cause.

It is worth watching only two domains. The first is the extremes the alarmists will go to in order to maintain their alarms. The AAE, as the subject of this thread, is an excellent and ongoing example of the contortions they are now putting themselves through.

The second it to watch the antics of those once committed to CAGW as they try to extricate themselves. The British PM recently issued 176 Fracking licenses, subject to EPA approvals. He then wrote to the EU to ask that no new anti-Fracking legislation would be imposed by the EU. Given the recent EU position on Fracking, the expectation was that they would tell Cameron to sod off! Instead they met his request? Cameron has already flagged the removal of “green taxes”. Now the EU has “ordered” the UK to end wind farm and solar subsidies.

Computer simulations have suggested that as glaciers and ice sheets melt, the distribution of mass on the Earth’s surface changes, in turn cause the Earth’s axis to shift and the positions of the poles to shift.

This thread started on a theme of Irony. Predictably this has been missed by the warmertariat who continue to proclaim their faith.

Looking at this from other perspectives. I nominate Policy, Commission of Audit and the March of Folly.

The policy of the government is to abolish the CO2 tax, the RET, dismantle a swag of related CAGW government departments, the Climate Commission and the Renewable Energy Funding mechanism.

Then we have the C of A and the Productivity Commission, the purpose of which is to review all government expenditure and to determine the “value” of such expenditure through the PC.

Having dismantled the CAGW policy initiatives the promise of Direct Action will also have to be reviewed, my guess is that the PC will find it to be less than valuable and it is likely to be still born.

Also in the “value” proposition will be the view that if, having dismantled all things CAGW, what is the value in continuing research funding for something for which we have no policy to utilize?

Public funding is directed through the ARC (Australian Research Council). The CSIRO, University and direct industry research funding along with a huge range of activist NGO funding/grants will dry up because they no longer support any government policy.

Many Australian Universities will be decimated. Just check how many Universities have based their core business on CAGW to suck up research and curriculum funding focused on this subject. The University of NSW home page is a great example, it is shot through with Climate Change, Global Warming and IPCC alarmism.

Academia is staring down both barrels of the destruction of their marketing model. Likewise, any hope of industry funding for their CAGW research is gone.

So to the March of Folly, the pursuit of that which is contrary to self interest? With a government determined to remove the policy legislation, the infrastructure and the funding model for CAGW, what better time to have Turney provide the government with all they need to withdraw such waste of public funding?

Pure folly, on’ya Turney. You done good.

I think it is poetic justice that this little jaunt has probable sealed the fate of global warming research funding, or at least diminished the amount, long term, the Oz universities are able to fiddle out of taxpayers.

It was obviously set up to be a big flip for a fading discipline. A huge degree of warming was going to be found, & widely promoted by the news [Con] men on board from such citadels of truth as our ABC & their BBC.

I also find it a delicious irony that the Yanks much hated by academia & the greenies, are going to have to haul our bacon, along with the Russian & Chinese bacon out of the fire, well the ice in this case.

I most certainly hope this twit Turney, & any other organizers involved get all the credit they deserve for the fiasco. It should look great on their resume.

If only we still had Gilbert and Sullivan to write a Pirates of Antarctica comic opera about the whole episode. Hell they should be able to make a 3 or even 4 act opera from this farce, rather than just a 2 act thing.

I am all for spending a little on studying climate change, particularly when looks at with an open mind.

All this bull dust about CO2 causing global warming is the bit I won't take, at least not until you can produce some evidence to back up the theory.
