The Dept of Homeland Security in the US has released and assessment report entitled "Rightwing Extremism": Current and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment.The DHS warns law enforcement agencies to be on guard against anyone who opposes; illegal immigration, same sex marriage, free trade agreements, gun control, the New World Order, One World Govt, the outsourcing of American jobs,the percieved threat to US sovereignty by foreign powers,abortion, declararions of martial law, creation of citizen detention camps, suspension of the US constitution,[or abridgement of state authority], people who believe in the end times prophecies and who stockpile food,ammunition or firearms.

Beginning to? Where have you been for the last 10 years? The US is a police state, with more police per head of population than any other advanced State and with many more pseudo-police paid for by property owners.

Australia, thankfully, has avoided the worst of that kind of development to date, but you can rest assured that senior police here see much to admire in the US example and dimwitted populist politicians are more than happy to give them what they want at election time.

They've already got shiny new powers of entry and surveillance that basically strip any right of habeus corpus from the subject, since they will not be told until the police have done their bugging, possibly not even then.

The US, howver, is not a democracy like Australia. It is a Republic that makes no bones about being unrepresentative. It is deeply divided economically, culturally and politically, despite the two parties being almost interchangeable. US politicians are quick to use those divides, just as the Nazis (and John Howard) were. Hitler was a "working class hero" before the war and swept to power on a wave of popular support for his economic policies that contrasted sharply with the depression that the Weimar Republic had presided over.

OTOH, to put a kinder view, the US powers that be are no doubt fully cognisant of the likely civil chaos that is going to occur as oil runs low and the current economic crisis is made to look minor. In that case, it is simply common sense to start looking for the likely seeds of such trouble in order to be able to minimise their effects.

Personally, I think it's a waste of time: the hydra problem. Every increase in State intrusion will lead to a greater resentment of the state and hasten breakdown, ISTM. I don't envy nos 46 to 50 in the US hotseat.
