This pro-democracy, rah-rah stuff, is in the unfortunate US State Department tradition, with yaleglobal as its instrument.
India's Congress Party prides itself on pursuing a course of non-alignment, of engagement not only with the democratic West but with near autocratic Russia. India's Communist and rightwing nationalist elements, are not the main determinants of India's centrist, socialist political direction. I think it is the Congress Party that epitomises the centrisr course - to the left what the US sees as ideal.
This article leaves out the Congress Party's deep and lasting alliance with Russia (where most of India's weapons, and military-industrial complex, come from) because the article is written more for a self-congratulatory Western audience than an Indian one.
When someone is writing propaganda different versions for different audiences are essential - so we read what we want to hear.
It would be interesting to hear what centrist Indians think about this tendentious article.
