Time for a shake out? : Comments

By David Gillespie, published 3/2/2009

You would need to drink almost twice as much Coke to get the same amount of sugar as is in the average weight-loss shake.

All true. But pharmacies are clearly not really about health...just "health related" stuff. I see a lot of dodgy products in pharmacies including untested/unproven concotions such as homeopathic pills. Whilst not dangerous, these placebos detract from real medicines.

As for the tobacco companies: Why are they still allowed to freebase the nicotine? Crackotine is all we are allowed to buy in Australia as Big Tobacco has hoodwinked the regulators and banned any safer alternatives. (such as home grown, smoke-free, or milder varieties)

For those that do not know, all commercial tobacco is processed using ammonia and other chemicals to make the nicotine more addictive and easier to take. It is the same process that turns cocain into Crack.
Free based nicotine makes it *much* harder for smokers to give up. Herbal alternatives such as Lobelia have also been banned. I would like to see laws to enforce minimal processing and *no freebasing* of all tobacco products. (QUIT should take this up as it will result in many, many more non-smokers.)

Crazy to fight a war on drugs whilst allowing the most harmful to do whatever they want. Similarly, crazy to allow fatty drinks to be sold as weight loss meals.
