Fair trade, as practised throughout the European Union is more or less another form of protectionism. Holding developing countries hostage to labour standards they can't possibly meet is used as justification for limiting access for their products to the markets of the developed world.

We all oppose the exploitation of children but when a teenager in a developing country is the only person in the family with a job, the choices facing that family are pretty stark. Reducing the chances of selling the products the teenager helps to produce in the name of fair trade isn't my idea of humanitarion behaviour.
