The compact disc - like the redundant vinyl before it - has changed its function and audience: now it has become a vault.

This article popped up in my Roger McGuinn Google News Alert, which usually brings me far less interesting material than this lovely, thoughtful article that I'm going to share with my friends.

What is the difference between Hoarders and a Collector. Perhaps it is the beholder. I too have become disappointed in the female sex who have changed from a life-partner who would put her shoulder to the wheel & pull her weight beside her partner in raising their children & stand by her man through thick & thin. Now she has become a whining no good feminist who swaps partners quicker than I can change my sheets, on the simple grounds that she is not happy.

No I am not a grouchy male, I am mother to four grown sons who think I am an Untidy Hoarder because I like to see where I have left things, so I keep them on the bench top in full view.

I still have some old 48's in the cupboard, but I threw out the last of the tapes as most are converted to C/D's. I can listen to mp3 and the like on my p.c. here as well as the wonderful invention, Your tube. Face book, a wonder in its own right as is my space, the list goes on. I hoard PDF files by the hundreds, and my computer is just over 2 years old. Next one will have to be portable, but a mp3 is a waste of good money, & modern young women are definitely not hoarders, she is a throwaway.

What a delightful article. This reminds me of when my father and I went into a HiFi shop and he marvelled over the clarity of the music from a CD player - this time to Neil Diamond's Hot August Night. He was stunned and deeply moved, it was like as though we were sitting in the front row seat of the concert. All this in a tiny North Queensland Town.
