Rapid growth and global warming : Comments

By Henry Thornton, published 4/12/2007

Growth has been far faster than anticipated, and so CO2 emissions and global warming have increased faster than anyone expected.

Just one question:
Let us suppose that carbon emission has been successfully reduced. Let us ignore the economic and monetary cost of the carbon reduction schemes. What will be the criteria that the world’s climate has been changed for the better by human intervention?

Please what is the test for success or failure in reducing Carbon dioxide emission?

So. The spivs are back in government and, surprise, surprise, Garnaut has crawled back out from under his rock. And to top it all off we have quotes from Stern, voodoo prince to the mediocrats.

Go ahead, guys, save the planet. But just remember that the same swing voters who were offended when Howard said they never had it so good, are the same turkeys with excess mortgages for more house than they need, and that they bought at the top of the cycle. And it is these same people who, by their excess consumption, will pay the most when Kevvy comes round with their share of the blank cheque he signed at Kyoto.

And they will be even grumpier by the next election.

And all this crap about growth increasing emissions from China has missed the point that their capacity to adopt new clean technology has been both enhanced and brought forward. It also means that their economy will level out much sooner but, of course, the climate clowns will incorporate the front end changes while making no adjustments to the scarry bits further out.

"global warming have increased faster than anyone expected."

Over the last decade there has been no warming. If that was "faster than..expected" then people must have expected a (what?)...cooling?

The hype continues unabated. Make a dire prediction. When it doesn't eventuate, just make an even more dire prediction. And then scream foul when the cant is pointed out.

Let me tell you all this! This planet has its own cycle, and we are all in a new beginning. What we humans are doing, is not going to make not one bit of difference. Yes! we have pressed the accelerator, but we are governed by the laws of nature. We all know that this planet is unstable and to think that the world will remain unchanged, is just a hollow dream. The planet earth is still growing out of its raw beginnings and it has its set rates of change. Think about it!

Thanks for the links to Professor Garnaut's speech. I would urge everyone to read it. This gives me real hope that Australia will do something sensible as Garnaut recognises that the problem is one of "solving" the prisoner's dilemma and of overcoming the Tragedy of the Commons as it applies to greenhouse gases.
