By Tim Thwaites, published 12/9/2006

What led to the change in Pluto’s designation was an increase in knowledge: which in turn demands tolerance of new and different ideas.

"With any increase in knowledge you run the risk of upsetting your present understanding. That demands tolerance of new and different ideas. Is that such a bad thing in our world of climate change and the War on Terror?"

Absolutely.

Originally I was saddened by Pluto's demotion to dwarf status - as the author states, science is all about updating knowledge and that means growth and progression.

More science article please! I need the sanity injection that they provide.

Kenny - I wonder what the ratio of religious to science articles is on OLO?

I'm guessing religious out number science based articles about, hmmm, 3 to one?

I'd say that's about right the wonderful world we live in needs to be understood and our tool to do it is science. It has served us well and will continue too. So come on GY please more science please we are rational beings.

A well written and thoughtful article by Tim. I agree with posters that say we should have more science on OLO. Trouble is, such articles are evidently not as much read or responded to as the more commonplace diatribes against Muslims for example.

All in agreement then. All too true about the number - and quality - of science articles on OLO, or for that matter in the popular media.

The general level of understanding of what "science" is, is reflected in those little curio items pegged onto the TV news, just after the weather.
