Dilemma? What dilemma?

“The future of the Iraqi people, one would normally assume, lies totally in their own hands. But in this case, the future of the Iraqi people is in many hands indeed.” -The future of ANY people is NORMALLY balanced with hands of world rulers, both own and overseas, and preoccupation with delusions of universal democracy and international law rightfulness already preoccupies common sense somewhere as these days self-whipping of “reasons for Iraqi war” is probably a next explicit example to.

The reason is clear as a sunray: it is better be safety now than sorry later

Not a bad article actually - normally I'm somewhat sceptical of Carey's pieces, as they all too often seem to trying to make a case for war.

If anyone has more information, I wouldn't mind a few posts or links to information that may explain the difference in statements made by Ahmadinejad and the Iranian civil servants - often it seems like they are completely contradicting one another. Then there is the complex relationship between the religious leaders and the government...

I think Carey has it right - Iran is baiting the US knowing that the US will eventually react and that any such reaction will serve Ahmadinejad's own purpose. The only defense is for the US to stay the distance in Iraq and this increasingly looks untenable. It's a no win situation for the US.

The whole thing is a worry. All because the Iranians are not prepared to allow the International Atomic Energy Commission to view their processes.
If they did allow the inspectors in they would gain not lose, unless their real aim is to build a bomb.

It seems that the US is worrying about the possibility of Iran passing a weapon to terrorists. Imagine the reaction if a device was setoff in a shipping container on the New York docks.
I find it hard to believe the Iranians would be that crazy.
It would not take much time at all for the radiological products to be traced back to Iran and then it would be goodbye Tehran.

Surely someone in Iran would blow the whistle on such a nightmare.
But what if they didn't ?

Iran poses a serious issue for the international community and I appreciate those who have read and commented on the essay here.

NOW IS almost THE TIME.

1/ To encourage the good relationship between the Iraqi PM and Iran.
2/ Hand over security to Iraq.
3/ Pull out.

Sunni's should be warned.

"IF you do not bring a halt to this insurgency against the US and the Shia, we will just pull out, leaving "them" STRONG and you weak this time."

OR....

Divide the country into Shia, Kurd, Sunni autonomous regions. (or.. create new nations.)

The chances of a fully functioning non sectarian democracy working in Iraq are less than zero. There can only be 2 reasons to hang in...

1/ Strategic Value (Oil, close to any possible upstart Arab dictator who needs to be put in his place) But this is self defeating as it will create more enemies.

2/ To Implement either the subdividing of the country, or a handover to IraqI rule 'ASAP'

My reasons for taking this position now, are that a cordial and peaceful relationship between Iran and Iraq (as indicated by the visit of Al Maliki to Iran this week) is in the interests of all of us as follows:

a) Reduction of Tension and of justification of terrorist attacks and providing a more peaceful environment as a supplier of Oil for dealings with the West

b) Best chance of defeating permanently the Sunni insurgency. (This will take brutality and ruthlessness that we don't condone in the West but it is the only way)

We will have to accept the fact that Iraq will ONLY ever be:
1/ Sunni dominated
or
2/ Shia dominated.

In either case, I think there would be a bloodbath.

If Iran is serious about 'wiping Israel off the map' then its game over for the world, and will happen anyway. There will be a USA/IRAN war or... IRAN/ISRAEL+USA war..
