By Virginia Postrel, published 4/7/2006

A new wave of social critics claim that freedom’s just another word for way too much to choose - but they're wrong.

Good article, and I suppose not surprising in a way. For myself at least, I am just too slack to wander through a vast array of products hoping to luck onto a "better" one than last time. Too much choice is too hard for me.
But I would like to offer a side comment. I reckon too much choice is a cohort of over-consumption. Since increasingly people are aware of the environment, climate and limited resources, let's look at the role of marketing in that area. It is the marketing persons job to increase consumption of his/her product, and they can be very artful, and very successful. So successful that just about anything can be produced, and then sold. But look around. Do we really need all this "stuff"? All that stuff takes energy and resources that eventually will run out. We are already taking more than our fair share of earth's treasure, and over-consumption is a large part of that. OK OK I know I got away from the article a tad..... sorry.

Great to see Virginia on this site - I hope it's the first of many articles.

The neo-puritans who seek to deny others' freedoms for their own good are just the latest incarnation of a strand of authoritarianism as old as politics.
