Dear Rob

Thank you for an interesting article. I was saddened to think that today's children will not have my wonderful memories of walking to school (Newcastle suburb) with my friends and class mates. It was good exercise. We walked about 3k each way. We were in the fresh air and we braved all kinds of weather conditions - which could be a challenge and was always fun. And what a great time for socialising! We shared jokes. We told shocking "porkies" and we chatted about our homework and what sports we would be playing that week. And we wore our school uniform with great pride.

We said hello to neighbours as we passed by. Everyone knew us. I have no recollection of an abduction or any attempted abductions. If there had been, we would have been informed and a special meeting of the P & C would have been called.

Walking home from school was pretty brisque for we had heaps of things to do when we arrived home. We had to change into our play clothes, have afternoon tea with Mum - fruit, milk and some home made biscuits - whilst we bombarded her with events of the day. Then we had to do our jobs for Mum and clean our shoes for the next day. Next was a game of cricket in the back yard or down to the park for a big hit. We were always doing something physical before our homework which we did after washing up after the evening meal. What a great life it was!

I realise that the above is not riveting reading! Even so, it does serve to highlight what today's children are missing out on. Walking to and from school was just one aspect of a very healthy lifestyle - even though we were poor.

I hope your article attracts parents with young children and perhaps makes them think about quality of life - rather than quantities of things!

Thank you
Kay

Dear Rob, Great arguement and its time we really started to get back to basic in regards to our children's health and wellbeing.
On another tangent I just finished watching Larry King on CCN (its Sunday arvo, so forgive me) but he had really interesting interview with a Dr. Peter Waldstein who has developed a kit that may protect our kids from predators. the identity kit uses your child's DNA to help law enforcement find your child should the worst happen.
I know this raises other important questions in law about DNA and its safe keeping but it could be a step in the right direction..?
