There is an excellent book on the role of Churches [surprise] in promoting the 'work ethic' as the invisible hand-maidens of business, written by then UOW Academic, Sharon Beder.

In history, particularly in UK under the Poor Laws the Churches ran workhouses basically making indigent folks unable to obtain work do slave labor for a meager allowance and survival rations. These days Christian groups are part of the welfare industry through what's called the Job Network and are perhaps reluctant moreso to appear critical of the government as their new, tax free, industries depend almost exclusively on government funding and tax-deductibility for donation revenue on the donor's part.
