David Leyonhjelm is a well known advocate for what some would say is unrestricted gun ownership. The right to take reasonable measures for ones self defence is enshrined in law, true. What is not given is the right to use such weapons in an unreasonably violent fashion. We can all
sympathise with the little old lady being attacked by a gang of thugs, and to their surprise and her relief the little old lady pulls out her trusty can of capsicum spray or AK47 whatever the case may be, and saves herself from those who were to do her harm, certainly would make a good Hollywood movie; "The Avenging Granny". The evidence of the use of "defensive" weapons by private citizens is somewhat different, not not much evidence of self defence, but a lot of evidence that these weapons, more that not, are used for harmful purposes. "The Avenging Granny" is far more likely to spray the check out chick at the local supermarket, because they are having an argument over the charge for a tin of 'Tiny Taters' than defending herself from a rampaging gang of thugs! Evidence for the harm done when unrestricted gun ownership is allowed, is America, the evidence is overwhelming.
