When Brussels and Washington start banning critics from crossing borders, free speech stops being a principle and becomes a geopolitical weapon.

Hmm, not sure about this. Free speech is a right of citizens. It does not necessarily extend to people who want to come here promoting obnoxious or violent ideologies. Australia has refused entry to Bilal Philips because he excuses Islamofascist terrorism, Gavin McInnes because he is a white supremacist, David Irving because he is a holocaust denier, and Itamar Ben-Gvir for promoting settler violence in the occupied West Bank. I think the Government was right to exclude them in each of these cases.

Denying these people entry does not necessarily deny free speech – Australians can access their material online or in books, and can express similar opinions.

The US and EU examples Binoy quotes are far more benign than the Australian ones I have used, and in each case I think the governments should not have refused them entry. But that is not really the point. It is reasonable for governments to refuse entry to people promoting ideologies they consider harmful, even if free speech would protect citizens who advocate the same thing.
