By Rafe Champion, published 20/10/2025

The Senate’s hunt for climate misinformation could start closer to home - with the myths about free wind, green energy, and endless sunshine.

The Greens already know about the misinformation on climate and energy matters; they are responsible for most of it.

Indyvidual,

I’ll sometimes skip commenting on a denialist article to avoid sounding repetitive. I mean, let’s face it: their talking points are few and haven’t changed much in 20 years. So, I was going to give this one a miss, but I can’t resist your invitation.

So, let’s destroy it - point by point…

1. "The sun and wind are free - so is coal."
No. Coal has to be mined, transported, burned, and cleaned up after. Sun and wind don’t. That’s the difference between harvesting energy and extracting it.

2. "Renewables aren’t clean or green."
Only if by "clean" and "green" you mean "no pollution or waste at all." Wind and solar emit a fraction of coal’s pollution and use far less water and land. Coal leaves toxic ash pits, mercury, and CO2 every day of operation. Solar panels don’t.

3. "Trillions wasted on renewables."
Fossil fuels receive $7 trillion per year in global subsidies, plus untold health and disaster costs. Renewables aren’t the ones bleeding taxpayers dry.

4. "Storage isn’t feasible."
Tell that to Hornsdale, Snowy 2.0, and the dozens of grid batteries under construction. Early mobile phones were "unfeasible" too. Progress doesn’t freeze because Rafe Champion did.

5. "Wind droughts prove unreliability."
Based on blog posts, not peer-reviewed studies. AEMO models these patterns and maintains stability through interconnection, firming, and diversified generation. Suggesting BOM should issue "wind drought warnings" misunderstands their role entirely.

6. "Coal plants are reliable."
Until they’re not. Every summer sees forced outages from heat stress and aging units. Renewables, by contrast, fail gracefully - gradually and predictably.

7. "CO2 is the breath of life."
So is water, but you can still drown in it. This is textbook climate denial rhetoric dressed up as insight.

There are no truths in this article, let alone "home truths." It’s recycled contrarianism - 20 years out of date and proud of it. Yes, the energy transition is messy - it was always going to be - but regression disguised as realism only helps to exacerbate that.

That was fun. Thanks, Indyvidual.
