By Chek Ling, published 10/4/2025

The redemptive features of proportional representation have been well canvassed by acknowledged scholars over the past decade.

No contest.

While the Chinese stoke the flames of discontent in the ME, the Muslim minority defeat the Chinese majority in up front disregard for social norms of Law and Order.
The Chinese have lost the aggressive streak from years of Communist plunder of their culture, with successive five year plans; where they do well though is in back room deals with Politicians.

Money rules in the end though, which ultimately is totally aligned with Politics. All very confusing!

Oh dear, talk about biting the hand that feeds. The author is a classic example of someone who was unhappy with his country of birth and now is unhappy with his adopted country. Lots of adjectives spring to mind: selfish and ungrateful in particular!

A thoughtful and timely article ... thank-you, Chek Ling!

I agree, proportional representation would be a much fairer and more representative electoral system. It's working well in the Senate and is really the only brake we have on the excesses of the corporately controlled major parties.

And yes, it will be up to the Greens, the Teals and the Independents to make it happen. It will however be an uphill battle. The Greens this election are being targeted in a heavily-funded and dirty tactical campaign, the likes of which we've never seen before. The monopoly media outlet in my state, the Courier-Mail, is running a blatant hate and misinformation campaign against the Greens. One of their journalists yesterday referred to them as 'dopey little Trots'! This is totally unprofessional and unacceptable, but it's lapped up by its blindly conservative readership. The Teals are receiving similar if slightly less vicious treatment.

And yes, AUKUS, salmon farming, nuclear power and new fossil fuel approvals are just some of the many examples of corporately-lobbied government decisions completely overriding and disregarding the will of the people. AUKUS in particular was a completely undemocratic executive decision made without any public consultation whatever. Even the overwhelming majority of our parliamentarians were kept in the dark and had no idea of what was being hatched up.

The Greens, Teals and Independents will very likely do well in these elections, despite the mud thrown at them by unethical groups with very deep pockets. Hopefully, as you say, Chek Ling, proportional voting might then be given some serious consideration.

Bronwyn:

You may not like the description 'dopey little Trots'! but that's perfectly accurate. The Greens in particular and the Teals to a slightly lesser extent are strongly socialist in their views and, dare I say it, communist. As someone who has been a state MP and remains very interested in Australian politics, I find the policies of the Greens and Teals to be destructive of the Australia that has created a largely but not perfectly egalitarian society where merit trumps race, gender, creed, etc (excuse the pun!). There is a reason why the Greens have been deliberately disadvantaged in Tasmania because previous governments tried coalitions with them and found they could not be trusted. The same in countries like Germany where ex-Green Angela Merkel is now seen as a failed political leader.

It is just possible that Bronwyn does not understand your meaning of Trots. Just in case she or others do not get your meaning, "Trots"
refers to Trotsky a member of the Russian Communist party who got in
the bad books of Stalin & others. I forget the actual details but if
I remember correctly he ended up dead.
On a previous occasion someone thought it meant they had the trots !

Proportional representation is far superior and closer to democracy than the present electoral system which has no representation at all.

But will politicians agree to democracy, not only in name?
