What a dumb article.

Rutte’s speech has some rhetorical flourishes, but he is hardly presenting it as poetry. Kampmark pretends otherwise in order to confect a literary device with which to mock someone he disagrees with. It is a tiresomely familiar feature of his writing – the weaker his argument, the more he resorts to sneering condescension rather than reason and evidence.

And unlike Kampmark, Rutte’s argument is grounded in fact and solid logic. NATO did stand by and do nothing when Russia invaded Georgia and Crimea, which may have encouraged Putin to think he could invade Ukraine without consequence. Comparisons with the appeasement of Hitler are hardly fanciful. Finland and Sweden – hardly notable as warmongers – have recognised the threat and joined NATO. Russia’s military spending is far higher as a percentage of GDP than the West. It is fighting Ukraine using Iranian-made missiles and North Korean troops.

Rutte quotes Putin as saying that “a serious, irreconcilable struggle is unfolding for the formation of a new world order”, and provides copious evidence that Putin believes this and is acting on it.

The West can either accept this, stand by and let it happen, as Kampmark seems to advocate (though never explicitly). Or we can push back. I really hope it is the latter.
