Will Trump seize the opportunity for an Israeli-Palestinian breakthrough : Comments

By Alon Ben-Meir, published 8/1/2025

Trump must know that denying the Palestinian right to statehood and conceding further Palestinian land to Israel is a recipe for the next horrific inferno.

If the US curtailed munitions supply to Israel the balance of power would be very different. Biden has upped weapons supply since October 2023 and now has ordered a late splurge. In contrast Iran seems quite restrained. Trump should make US munitions the last and see what happens.

Trump is an evil alt-right warmonger.

Also Trump is the last chance to bring peace to the world.

Does the left even know how to spell consistency?

There is this never-ending assertion that the two state proposal is the only way to 'solve' the problems in the Levant. But there's no evidence for that - just assertion and hope mixed with not a little stick-it-to-the-Jews schadenfreude.

What we do know is that when Israel tried to give the Palestinians a state of their own in Gaza, it was almost immediately turned into an armed camp and the rockets started flying. Its all very well for those ensconced in academia in 'relatively' safe NY to demand that Israel try the failed experiment all over again, but the Israelis aren't so keen to give the Palestinians a second go at 7 October type celebrations of murder.

Trump may well bring peace to the Levant but it won't be by forcing the Israelis into a false settlement. It'll be by eliminating all the external supports that Fatah and Hamas rely on and finally convincing the Palestinians that their 'river to the sea' fantasies will never be fulfilled.

Kudos mhaze. The situation in Israel and Palestine is a side effect of the war for oil resources and global stability. We need to find an alternative to oil and the Suez Canal.

No war in Israel = no conditions for Armageddon.
No Armageddon = Jesus not coming back, thus losing the support of American Christian fundamentalist voters.

However, this is Trump's second term, he cannot stand for elections again so he no longer needs to please his voters, thus he will do whatever he likes, whatever his mood dictates at the time - which will be totally random and unpredictable.

He could make peace in the Middle-East;
Or he could raise the flames of war;
He could toss some nuclear fireworks up in the air;
He could direct them at Russia or China... or Ukraine, or Israel perhaps - perhaps at Australia?

All possibilities are open and we will never know until it happens... Trump himself probably doesn't know either.
