One issue he hasn’t picked up on much is the attitude and possible role of other players in the Middle East. An interesting piece in yesterday’s Australian newspaper by Michael Shoebridge of Strategic Analysis Australia suggests that the governments of many Arab countries are secretly cheering Israel on, in the hope that the conflict weakens or even leads to the collapse of the Iranian regime which has been a source of violence, chaos and oppression across the region, most notably in Syria and Lebanon. He argues that the prime reason for Hamas’s attack on Israel a year ago was not to further the cause of Palestinians but to disrupt the growing political alliances between Israel and Iran’s rivals in the Middle East, particularly the process of normalisation of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.
One striking quote:
“Almost every Arab nation supports Israel’s attack on Iran’s decades-long strategic cultivation of armed proxies. The just won’t say so publicly.”
