A year of reckoning : Comments

By Alon Ben-Meir, published 11/10/2024

A year since Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023, and Israel's retaliation have demonstrated once again that neither has learned anything.

Another good article from Alon.

One issue he hasn’t picked up on much is the attitude and possible role of other players in the Middle East. An interesting piece in yesterday’s Australian newspaper by Michael Shoebridge of Strategic Analysis Australia suggests that the governments of many Arab countries are secretly cheering Israel on, in the hope that the conflict weakens or even leads to the collapse of the Iranian regime which has been a source of violence, chaos and oppression across the region, most notably in Syria and Lebanon. He argues that the prime reason for Hamas’s attack on Israel a year ago was not to further the cause of Palestinians but to disrupt the growing political alliances between Israel and Iran’s rivals in the Middle East, particularly the process of normalisation of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

One striking quote:
“Almost every Arab nation supports Israel’s attack on Iran’s decades-long strategic cultivation of armed proxies. The just won’t say so publicly.”

Dear Alon,

Another good article, thank you.

May you be sealed in the book of life, the book of health and the book of peace.

More deluded preaching from the Partisan Pulpit.
One would think this clown author would exhibit some knowledge of his subject matter.

The outcome for this round of US delusional failure in foreign policy, rests with the result of a US election: For the moment, Israel will attempt to sit tight.

A very good article by Alon Ben-Meir, telling it like it is. A two state solution, fair and equatable to both Palestinians and Israelis, is the only possible outcome to a lasting peace. The cycle of war and retaliation must stop. The victims in all this are innocent people, how many have died needlessly since 1948, possibly a million. October 7th was Palestinian retaliation for past Israeli atrocities committed, the Israeli response was retaliation for present Palestinian atrocities. PEACE!

"Good articles" mean diddly squat. The people actually involved don't read articles by academic windbags - thankfully.

Nor, by Old Farts on a nondescript little Aussie Forum, but we have one who does but keep trying, don't we ttbn.

BTW; The local One Nation candidate seems your kinda guy, a lovely white Anglo fella, on immigration he said; "We are replacing the wogs with terrorists" I assume the wogs he was referring to were the post war Southern European migrants. I didn't bother to find out. What about that accused drug snorter leader of the SA Liberal Party? Any comment.
