Can 'unreliables' be made a bit reliable? Cost? : Comments

By Geoff Carmody, published 8/10/2024

Because wind and solar work only a fraction of the day a 'renewables'-only grid needs insane amounts of generation.

AFAIK Australia doesn't have German style curtailment payments for when overbuilt wind and solar need to be taken off line. Then again there seems to be a few types of under-the-counter payment. Meeting the storage requirement with lithium batteries would be mind boggling. Suppose we wanted 1% or 3.65 days of the annual 273,106 X 1m kWh. At $700 capex per kWh of lithium ion I make that a lazy $1.9 trillion. Batteries aren't going to run smelters and gas backup is going to get more expensive.

I caught a snippet of Malcolm Turnbull on TV saying nuclear was too expensive. Don't recall the interviewer pointing out his beloved pumped hydro project Snowy 2 went from $2bn to $12bn. In GWh Snowy 2 would store 350/273,106 or half a day of Australia's annual but still growing electricity use.

The dishonesty and environmental vandalism of the renewable energy industry is chilling. If the misinformation bill passes, reliable power crusaders like Geoff might be curtailed, just like much of solar power currently generated, making the looming renewable energy disaster he frequently warns of more likely.
