What a peculiar article. Most developed economies (including Australia) went into deficit - or most commonly, further into deficit - between 2019 and 2022 because most governments responded to the COVID pandemic with massive fiscal stimulus. And most developed economies (including Australia) recorded a surge in inflation in the past three years because of the effects of the COVID pandemic on global supply chains and, more recently, the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine.

To attribute the USA’s recent inflation and fiscal performance solely to the relative economic management of Biden and Trump, without even a passing reference to the external shocks most economies experienced in the past five years, is a bit like condemning John Curtin and Ben Chifley for overseeing Australia’s largest ever budget deficits in the 1940s without reference to the fact that those deficits arose because of the cost of fighting World War 2.

What’s more, the USA’s largest fiscal deficit since the 1940s occurred in 2020 – the last year of Trump’s presidency.

A far more realistic comment would be, had it not been for the Trump administration's efforts for the Biden crowd to take advantage of the situation would be way worse. Trump literally saved Biden's butt !
