Biden’s balancing act: Israel’s national security versus the Palestinians’ humanitarian crisis : Comments

By Alon Ben-Meir, published 19/3/2024

In recent weeks, the Biden administration has found itself facing a serious dilemma as to how to balance its commitment to Israel's national security along with the humanitarian crisis facing the Palestinians in Gaza.

I mostly agree with the article.

However, some of the suggested measures are impractical:

1. No safe corridor out of Rafah is possible without the consent of either Israel or Egypt. Egypt may only consent if Biden agrees to accept all the refugees into America itself, which would not be popular there just as no other country in the world is willing to accept them.

2. Biden cannot limit the supply of bombs to Israel while claiming to be committed to Israel's security, because the same bombs could be needed at a moment's notice for a war against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

What Biden COULD do more instead, is to advance a series of escalating anti-Netanyahu and anti-settlement resolutions in the UN security council. If Netanyahu fails to take heed, then eventually the security council could resolve for an international force headed by America to bomb out the Jewish settlements in the West Bank (with due prior warning for their residents to leave if they wish to remain alive).

Yuyutsu. Hear, hear and well said. And likely to speed up the two-state solution.

Dear Alan,

A two-state solution?

I doubt the "Palestinians" will ever accept it.
An independent state implies not just privileges but also responsibilities and accountability.
The "Palestinians" refused several times to have a state of their own in the West Bank and Gaza, I doubt they will suddenly change their mind.

Let them do what they like then, but meanwhile Israel has to be out of there.

Well obviously, should the "Palestinians" be foolish enough to use their territory to harass Israel even after it completely withdraws to its pre-1967 borders, then Israel will be forced to take over again - this time legitimately.
