But much of the rest of his essay is definitely questionable especially in regards to the social and economic freedoms of the masses. It is effectively a 24/7 surveillance state and a hugely enormous environmental disaster zone too. Its continued prosperity depends on plundering the undeveloped countries even while pretending to help develop them.

IMHO both the US and Israel rank equally for the title.

I suggest you just you just fire up your search engine and look for
Robert Spencer's book "The History of Jihad". Then buy it.
You will then understand most of what is going on not just in the
Middle East but in the "West" in general.
Having read it I know how impossible it is to get a conventional
settlement between the Islamist Arabs and Israel and Western Democracies in general.
So stop arguing about irrelevancies and get to the knub of the problem.
