There is no logic in longer terms for federal government : Comments

By Scott Prasser, published 7/2/2024

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's recent comments that federal parliament's 'terms are too short with just three years' has raised expectations for a referendum for four-year fixed terms.

3 years is too long fora bad government and too short for a good one. A good government is usually returned, but not always. This requires a good campaign and candidates. Sadly, many governments are stuck with bad policies and controlled by vested interests/backroom power brokers allocating preference deals that completely confound the will of the electorate. Time for Optional preferences!

Any Govt can only perform to the level of the Peter Principle Bureaudroids it inherits ! Any move to change that insidious system is blocked by the Public Service Unions !

Cut their terms back to two years to make them frightened of the electorate again. Australian politicians are acting like our masters, not our servants as they are meant to be. If voters don't want to vote more often, they deserve the rubbish they are getting now.

Not only do we have low quality politicians, we also have ordinary Australians who are compliant, and who value a comfortable life more than they want to protect their own freedom and their country's assets.

The proposal to change the term to four years was put to referendum back in the 1980s. It got less than 1/3rd approval which means it was even less popular than the ill-fated Voice lunacy.

The whole thing is a non-starter only ever raised by those in power who either want to hold onto that power a little longer or want to change the current narrative.

BTW, while the US system for president is 4 year terms, the US House of Representatives only has two year terms.
