The battle over Israel's soul : Comments

By Alon Ben-Meir, published 28/3/2023

Netanyahu is deliberately being devious, deceitful, and cunning. Reforming the judiciary is not just another bill like those that deal with the budget, military appropriation, or infrastructure.

A, I believe, clearly corrupt PM wants to change the judiciary to create a get out of jail free card.

Given when out of office he faces possible criminal charges and banishment forever from political/official office!?

The fact he wants this makes him, I believe, look even more guilty than he may well be!?

Moreover, he has stirred a monumental civil revolt against him at the worst possible time for Israeli security! Which probably means, I believe, makes him now unelectable or fit for any public office!?

It's political Hari Kari!?

Yes, he's trying to make changes to the judiciary so that he can never be prosecuted for any crime and also has full power over all laws, it's essentially making Israel a full dictatorship and even the US is telling it's citizens in Israel to leave and that the country now faces civil war.

Also they thought they had clout with Saudi Arabia as an ally, but now that Saudi Arablia and Iran have restablished diplomatic ties that's all gone, and China has become the new global peacemaker and worlds superpower.

Meanwhile Netanyahu agreed to pause his "judiciary reform" till July due to heavy pressure from mainly two men:
1) Joe Byden, some insignificant temporary replacement as the president of Israel's remote American colony.
2) Boaz Ben Tsur, the defense attorney who represents Netanyahu in his bribery charge, who informed Netanyahu that if these laws pass then he would no longer be able to represent him.

Itamar Ben Gvir, the leader of Israel's Nazi party, would not agree to any such pause, even a temporary one like this, so in order to appease him and keep him in coalition, Netanyahu promised him to bring forward to this coming Sunday what he agreed to during his coalition's negotiations, which is to grant Ben Gvir in legislation a private armed militia which will obey him alone, akin to the Wagner group or the Iranian revolutionary guard, starting with 900 already-serving police special-forces personnel, then receiving up to A$3.5 billion for enlisting more troops.

Part of the paused "reform" is to prevent Israel's high court from annulling such draconic laws on the grounds of "unreasonableness", as it now still can.

Netanyahu doesn't want all this, but he will do just anything to avoid jail and frankly, I cannot promise how far I could go myself, what horrible acts could I possibly perform if I were threatened myself with the horrors of prison.

There is only one man who can now save Israel.
The president, Isaac Herzog.
As president, Herzog has the absolute authority to pardon anyone, even before their trial is concluded.
If Netanyahu is pardoned, not that he deserves it in any way, then he would no longer need his coalition partners, nor to emasculate Israel's judicial system, then he could instead form a new coalition with Israel's center parties (whose main election promise was to never join or support Netanyahu so long as he stands trial on corruption charges).
Not the best of course, not at all, but not as terrible as things in Israel stand now.
