The importance of investigating Peter Bol's atypical finding for recombinant EPO : Comments

By Chris Lewis, published 22/2/2023

Although the part B sample was not conclusive in terms of affirming the positive part A sample, thus allowing Bol to resume training, the relevant rules around an ATF finding now allow for further investigation before guilt or innocence will be implied.

We've known of sample swaps by corrupt or bought officials for some time. And similarly, we've known about DNA as a means of positively identifying paternity or ID. Every athlete needs to have an DNA sample collected and held somewhere not available to sports officials but made available in circumstances such as these to positively identify whose sample belongs to who.

It's simply not good enough for cheats to impugn the reputation and good name of honourable athletes by secretly switching their clean samples for tainted ones. Or have compromised or dishonest officials do it for them.

DNA records would end this forever and allow the honest compactor to avoid trail by media and flawed rules. Even now, a DNA test would decide if the A sample was indeed Peters! But no, we had to go through this endless speculation, BS and suspicion, while he/she waits for fair play judgement.

Me? I'd subject a few folks to an interview accompanied by covertly deployed, unbeatable space age lie detection!
